The Unexpected Use of Artificial Grass

Artificial grass is most commonly used in gardens, outside public spaces and for sport pitches, but it is increasingly being seen in the more unexpected of places. The original purpose of artificial turf was the perfect, pristine look of it, its great durability, and its lack of maintenance, however, lately I have noticed its appearance in unlikely setups and more a different purpose altogether.

A few weeks ago I visited Depot, a former warehouse, now a permanent street food venue. Depot also hosts pop-up beer and gin festivals from time to time throughout the summer. I happened to visit as the Gin Festival kicked off.

Filled with dozens of street food trucks of Mexican food, fish and chips, ice cream, wood-fired pizza, pulled-pork and plenty more cuisines of food, and pop-up gin cocktail bars, the venue was brought to life with its interior design. The atmosphere was complimented by indoor picnic tables, bunting, caravans with vintage furniture, an excessively large disco ball, innovative lighting features and an outside beer (gin?) garden.

As I admired the interior of the venue in more detail, I began to notice more features — all small and probably insignificant to the average onlooker. But as the observant and curious I am, I could not help but find something small to get excited over.

Placed cleverly and creativity on the picnic tables were thin strips of artificial grass, acting as table runners and adding to the outdoorsy/garden-haven look of the indoor venue. This kind of usage of artificial grass is not seen every day, but is definitely increasing in places like Depot. Not only does it look stylish and creative, it adds a fresh, airy feel as well. With Depot being a former warehouse, it lacks light and has a natural industrial feel to it which can feel harsh and derelict, but the usage of artificial grass shows just how the right design can have a huge impact and create a completely different kind of feel. The contrast between the old building and the prettiness of the inside also adds an interesting twist on the décor. The designers used small pieces of artificial grass, placed on picnic tables and nowhere else, making it subtle as opposed to overdoing it. As the saying goes, less is more.

It is not just venues such as Depot that are making the most of this new use of artificial turf either; more and more homeowners are adding it to their interiors for both design and practical reasons. For homes that do not have gardens, adding artificial grass to a small section of the home is a great way of adding the feel of the outdoors without the actual outdoors.

Another use is adding artificial turf to staircases in order to add a fresh look to homes — it acts as an original focal point and as well encourages connotations of the outdoors such as calmness, which not only creates interiors that are easy on the eyes, but on the brain too.
