Good decision-making skills are a key attribute of great leaders. Everyone faces decisions, often times with no clear right answer, incomplete info and too many repurcussions (if you make a mistake). Its easier to decide if you have key considerations and therefor the best CEOs have principles and solid “framework” to simplify their thinking.

I watched a video interview of Jeff Bezos, founder and previous CEO of Amazon, where he shared some guiding principles that were profound yet practical. Sharing them in the post below, along with a few more I parsed from other prominent leaders (books, TED talks, etc.)

#1. Disagree but Commit:

In many cases, you will have 2 people who want to do opposite things. And the correct choice may not always be clear. There may not be any easy way to predict outcomes or understand which one has lower risk.

Sometimes, this will be a choice between a new path and inaction/status quo.

In such cases, one person chooses to disagree and commit to the other person’s decision.

The “commit” portion is critical, because even though the choice was not your preference you are willing to put in any work necessary to back that choice and make…
