What leadership skills should I cultivate?
This is a question I get frequently as a manager who mentors junior IT professional. I have also headed local chapters of corporate women’s network groups; variations of this question get asked at every panel and networking event.
Leadership Pyramid:
The answer is not a one-size-fits-all all, and varies based on where you are in your career, whether you work for a startup vs Fortune 500 or run your own business. Some basic traits are universal, as outlined in my most popular article (link at the end) That article ranked among the Top 3 articles for leadership development for many months when it was first published.
For the rest, the skill pyramid in the above image is a good approximation. The list is not set in stone but similar to learning a new language. You start with the alphabet first, then simple words and sentence structures (enough to be understood), and then move on to more complex grammar principles.
