Career Aphorisms — Concepts that sound overly simplistic, but are profound in reality and extremely hard to implement. Open secrets, if you will.

#1] Career success = Get Results x Get Known.

Work on both parts of this equation.

I’ve made mistakes with both parts. Some roles where I was so busy getting results, that I forgot to evangelize my contribution, and others took credit or trivialized my part. Some roles where I was so busy getting known, my results started to slip, and I felt too guilty to leverage the connections and trust I had built up.

#2] Invest in your relationship with your boss and her boss.

Actively build sponsorship.

Do you know if your boss is gunning for a promotion. If he/she were to get a fabulous role elsewhere, would they tap you to join them?

It is amazing how many people have no idea on how to build such strong, meaningful ties with the person who holds the strongest rein on their immediate advancement.

#3] Ask for what you want.

Tenure does not equal promotion. Not everyone is motivated purely by money. Some are…
