“Hope in a Dark Place” by Kaelyn Jens (Sterling College)

Where is God hiding?
Is he hidden by the swirling smoke from the burning fields?
Have you looked in the frozen dew on the willow tree, that
tinkles in the breeze?
Is he shrouded in the flame of a lone candle
that stands waiting in the window for a lover to return?

Have you searched in the laughter of childhood friends?
Is He in the snow that falls heavy on upturned faces?
Have you looked to the stars, Orion, Leo, Scorpio, Virgo, to
point the way?

In the promising garden of sunset
Or the fiery dragon of the sunrise?
Clouds that tell stories in the sky
Chaff swirling and catching drops of color from a setting sun
Wheat that salutes the ocean waves

Deer that stand tall, then are gone,
a white flag waving behind them
A fawn beneath a tree

I tell you, all these things point to Him
Yet you will not find Him here.
Storyteller says: Reader, tell me, what is God?
He is our sehnsucht.
