The running scene in Dallas has been improving. As a spread out, quite car-oriented city, running takes some planning. Our guide to running in Dallas includes some great routes downtown Dallas, Fort Worth, and cities popular with business travelers such as Plano, Richardson, and Irving. Our guide below has the highlights in each area:

Downtown. Highlight is the Katy Trail, a lovely 3.5 mile corridor following an old railroad bed. In that area are also the Turtle Creek Trail, the gorgeous Highland Park neighborhood, and pleasant SMU campus. Our ‘Historic Dallas’ Tour includes Deep Ellum and the National Landmark Swiss Ave. neighborhood. From the Deep Ellum area, further east, the Santa Fe Trail runs about 5 miles along an old rail track. The ‘destination’ run in Dallas is White Rock Lake, a beautiful park/reservoir with a 9+ mile paved path around its perimeter. Also close to downtown are the Trinity Strand and Trinity Skyline Trails, in an old riverbed, Just north of Dallas, Bachman Lake has a nice 3.1 pile waterside perimeter trail.

  • Plano/Richardson Area: Arbor Hills Nature Preserve, Duck Creek Greenbelt (Garland).
  • Fort Worth. Extensive series of trails called the Trinity Trail System.
  • DFW/Grapevine: Best bet is series of trails around Grapevine Lake
  • South of Dallas: Trinity Forest Trail at Lemmon Lake is a good running spot.
