Reflection on reflecting

Going in to week 3 of PSM, I knew that this would take the most to get my head around. ‘Deliberate development’ what does that mean? How does is work within self management?

I understood the thinking behind it — we should all be responsible for our own and organisational growth — but what soon became apparent, using the immunity to change map, is that it is so much more than that. We all need to be responsible for being aware of how we think, how we behave, create relationships as individuals, teams and an organisation. And recognise the assumptions we make that shape all of that.

Without being truly aware of these areas of ourselves it will be difficult to live self management in the workplace. There needs to be an understanding of the obstacles that we might create, without fully knowing it, that block progress with self management. And everybody needs to be involved and invested in being self-aware and our development, to understand why we are reacting to certain changes and approaches which could impact the shift to self management.

Personally, using the immunity to change map really helped me to understand the assumptions that I make and the shift needed in my mindset to ‘unlearn tendencies’ and live the learnings from this course and self management. — Letting go of control doesn’t mean that everything will go wrong. Quite the opposite! As part of deliberate development it is my responsibility to make that change within myself. I’m looking forward to seeing the opportunities and learnings it brings!
