February 26: Celebration of Saints Photini, Photis, Photo, Porphyrius, and Sebastian

Saint Photini the Samaritan, from the city of Sichar, met Jesus at Jacob’s well. He baptized her a Christian and she became one of the first women of Samaria who believed and devoted themselves to spreading the Gospel in Africa and Rome. Saint Fotini converted Domnina, the daughter of Emperor Nero, and to her maids, to Christianity. For this, she was killed along with her sisters and her sons. Photo and Photis were the second and third sisters of Saint Photini.
Sebastian was the ruler of Carthage, who converted to Christianity through the preaching of Photini and suffered a martyr’s death during the reign of Emperor Nero.
Porphyrius was born in Thessaloniki and came from a wealthy family. He renounced his wealth and his parents and left for Egypt where he became a monk living in a skete. After five years of ascetic life, he began spreading the Gospel in Jerusalem to Jews and Greeks. At some point in his life, he fell seriously ill, yet he was miraculously healed. He was a close friend of Mark, his later biographer, who helped him settle all the pending financial issues with his brothers in his hometown Thessaloniki. In A.D. 395, he was ordained Bishop of Gaza. With the help of Emperor Arcadius he erected churches in the place where pagan temples stood and throughout his priestly life he carried out philanthropic and missionary work. He died after a short illness, in 420 AD.
