March 11: Celebration of Saint Sophronius

Saint Sophronius was the son of pious Christians born in Damascus, Syria. At a young age, he became a monk in the monastery of Abbot Theodosius. He prayed to the Holy Unmercenaries, Cyrus and John, who cured him of an incurable eye disease and thus wrote them a famous eulogy. He was ordained Patriarch of the Sion Church from Saint Modestus, Patriarch of Jerusalem, as a reward for his virtue and this commitment to the Orthodox faith. However, when he took over the patriarchal throne it was an extremely difficult time for the local church. The Monophysitism heresy and the pressure by the Arabs who had occupied Bethlehem and had aspirations for Jerusalem created oppressive conditions. He condemned Monophysitism but surrendered Jerusalem to the Arabs. He died a year later, in A.D. 638.
