March 17: Celebration of Saint Alexius
Saint Alexius was born in Rome around A.D. 400 of wealthy and pious parents, who shared their daily table with the poor and needy. His father Euphemianus and his mother Aglais raised him giving him an excellent education and upbringing. When he was of an age to marry, his parents arranged for him to marry a young girl of noble origin and exemplary character. However, Alexius wished to follow an ascetic life, far away from riches and the safety of his family. He took a part of his property and headed towards Syria and Mesopotamia. When he arrived at Edessa of Mesopotamia, he gave away all his possessions, even his clothes, and lived in poverty in the church of the Virgin Mary for seventeen years. During all this time his parents and his wife awaited him patiently. By a twist of fate, he returned to his family home, begging for some food, which he handed to the poor and allowed himself only a crust of breast and some water. No one recognized him. He lived being poor yet merciful, for another seventeen years. His father, his mother and his wife recognized him on the day of his death after he had recorded all his life and his experiences. His relics were set on pilgrimage and in accordance with the scriptures, everyone who kissed them was healed, while during their burial they gave out a fragrance and gushed myrrh, which was a remedy and treatment for anyone who needed it.
