March 18: Celebration of Saints Eucarpion and Cyril
Saint Eucarpion is referred to as a soldier and a persecutor of Christianity during the reign of Maximian. However, his life was illuminated by the preachings of those he persecuted. Soon he became a Christian and was tortured to death, thus winning the crown of martyrdom.
Cyril was born about 310 A.D. in Jerusalem and was ordained Bishop of Jerusalem in A.D. 348. He fought against Arianism and dogmatic kings and bishops and defended the true faith and the decisions of the First Ecumenical Council. This led to his opposition with Emperor Constantius, who was a defender of Arianism, and his exile in Tarsus of Cilicia. Saint Cyril insisted that his contradiction and dispute with the Arian Bishop Acacius of Caesarea who was always against him should be discussed during a Council. The Council of Jerusalem convened for this purpose in A.D. 359 and acquitted him. However, Acacius, with the help of the Emperor, foiled the decisions of the Council and consequently, Saint Cyril remained disordained and in exile. He returned to Constantinople during the reign of Emperor Julian the Apostate and was exiled again by Emperor Valens. In 378 A.D. he returned once more to Constantinople vindicated and died peacefully in A.D. 387. He is commemorated in the history of our Church for his 23 Catechisms, through which he taught the fundamental principles of faith and the Christian life, keeping the apostolic tradition alive.
