March 3: Celebration of Saints Eutropius, Cleonicus, and Theodoretus

Saints Eutropius and Cleonicus from Amasea of Pontus lived in the times of Emperor Maximian. Their faith in Christ and their kinship with Saint Theodore the Tyron turned the rage of ruler Asclepiodotus against them. They were taken to prison and were tortured in order to renounce their faith. Their courage and their blessing to work wonders turned many of their fellow inmates to the faith of Christ, which angered the ruler who ordered their death by crucifixion. They, therefore, won the crown of martyrdom.
Saint Theodoretus was a priest with unshakable faith in Christ, an elder of the Church of Antioch, who strongly resisted the desire of Julian the Apostate for the return of the idols. He was led to death by beheading, without contesting his role as a priest and renouncing his Lord.
