March 9: Celebration of the 40 Holy Martyrs
Forty select soldiers, all Christians, who belonged to the army of Licinius, were tortured for their faith and surrendered their lives to the Lord maintaining their unshakable faith. All forty soldiers were arrested in Sebaste (a province of the Byzantine Empire in today’s modern city of Sivas) by eparch Agricola and were thrown into the icy waters of a lake in extremely cold conditions. Only one lost his courage and came out of the water. However, his “replacement” immediately threw himself in the lake, a guard named Aglaius who confessed his faith in Jesus who dived and joined them. The next morning, the forty Saints who were almost dead from the cold, faced martyrdom from their torturers who broke their limbs. No one chose the earthly life. No one lost his courage in front of the unspeakable tortures and the pain. Their relics were buried by faithful Christians, and according to the will of the Holy Forty Martyrs, they were not separated and dispersed. In A.D. 438, the holy relics were found hidden in the church of Saint Thyrsus, during the reign of Empress Pulcheria, who built a temple where they could be kept.
