What about a different New Year´s resolution: Start protecting the environment in 2019 by saving water!

There are 7 important “R´s” in green living: reduce, refuse, re-use, repurpose, repair, recycle and rot. Today I want to start with “reduce” and show you simple ways to reduce your water usage in 2019. It is much easier than you think and you don´t even have to get a rain water barrel in your garden to do so. Let me show you how:

Saving water in the kitchen:

  • Put a bowl into your sink collecting the water when you rinse fruit, vegetables, a glass etc. Then use this water for your indoor, balcony and/or garden plants.
  • Use the water you cook your vegetables in to make a stock for sauces or use it to water your plants. Just let the water cool down, fill into a clean glass bottle and store in the fridge until you need it. You can use this for about 2 weeks. Watering your plants with vegetable water will save you having to add fertilizers. BUT: this is only a good idea if you know that the vegetables have not been chemically treated in any way!
  • Should you boil your eggs the traditional way in water then save this water as well and give it to your indoor plants. The calcium contained in the shells will make your plants look super healthy.
  • Re-use glasses and cups for the day. Don´t get a clean one out every single time! Sometimes you might have to quickly rinse your glass, but there is no need to wash up too many for one day.
  • A dish washer uses a lot less water than washing up by hand, but it only makes sense if you can fill it.
  • Washing up by hand use the cold water that comes from the tap first as well as it will mix with the hot water to a good temperature. And only fill the sink as far as you have to, i.e. don´t fill it to the top for 2 cups, 2 glasses and 2 plates.
  • Cook together what you can. Say you want to boil potatoes and steam some vegetables: if you got the right pot, you can do both in one

Saving water in the bathroom:

  • A shower uses a lot less water than a bath! Specially if you turn it off when applying shampoo and shower gel. I am not saying: Don´t have a bath. But, have more showers than baths. Unless you fill the…
