The Green Party is the Only Progressive Alternative
I authored the following statement for the Green Party of Allegheny County (GPOAC) on February 17, 2020. I’ve shared here for further public dissemination.
Last week, the GPOAC released a statement condemning the PA state legislature for its decision to use corporate tax giveaways to encourage more fracking and petrochemical processing at the expense of the ecosystem. We also called out the theft of democracy from Iowa’s electorate. Now we’ve learned Allegheny County’s Democrats have ignored a slate of progressive populist candidates during their recent endorsement meeting. Instead, that party endorsed several pro-fracking, corporate fascists who embody a desire to destroy the health and stability of our region.
The complete disregard for our communities confirms the Green Party is the only progressive alternative. We welcome residents who can no longer stomach such exploitation by the local political establishment.
Over a century ago, our ancestors stood against Carnegie’s thugs in Homestead that ignited the 20th Century struggle for basic labor rights. Steelworkers who embodied courage and social democracy took up the fight for the working-class. Now it’s time to stand up and fight again. The Green New Deal would be the next renaissance of American manufacturing. Join us to empower our region and halt the ravaging destruction to the ecosystem.
