Congratulations, Maheshtala Girl’s School’s Graduating Green Rhinos
Public speaking. It’s something we all fear. Sweaty palms, closed throats, apprehension. But these amazing young ladies, pictured above, pushed through the fear, got up in front of a group of peers, and spoke passionately about the work they have been doing to make their community more sustainable.
Maheshtala Girl’s School hosted its second Green Rhinos presentations last Saturday. These young women, ages 13 to 15, have been working hard over the past year. It has been a journey of personal growth for these young women as they precede upon the path to creating an environmentally conscious society. They have been busy planting over 500 trees, documenting plant species in the area, making trash bins, crafting recycled artwork, and creating 100 informational posters.
They have also been busy building self confidence and growing as a person. The vigor with which they spoke about their work reminded one of a practiced public speaker, with years of experience. They were eloquent and unafraid. I know when I was 14, I could never have spoken as they did. It was inspiring to see what transformational leadership training promotes in a person. These young women are not only a force in their communities, but they are a force to be reckoned with.
They have also been busy building a community. Two classes have now completed the Green Rhinos program at Maheshtala Girl’s School. And just because the program has ended doesn’t mean the passion has. In fact, it is growing. Alumni have been active in their community, reporting on their past projects and brainstorming new ones. There is a wave of sustainability rushing over the community. The students have great momentum and plan to create a Green Rhinos club at their school. There is strength in numbers and the Green Rhinos at Maheshtala Girl’s School are definitely a force for nature.
