Alumni Spotlight: Andrew Harris talks life as an application developer at Oracle
Meet Army Veteran and Green River College alum Andrew Harris. After completing his Bachelor of Applied Science in Software Development, Andrew joined Oracle as an application developer. In the short Q & A below, he talks about his role and company culture at Oracle.
First off, what led you to Green River’s Software Development program?
ANDREW: I chose GRC because of its well-deserved reputation for academic excellence, proximity, cost, and small class sizes. Being in a smaller setting at a small college was the right choice for me. And the fact that main campus is gorgeously lost in the woods is a plus.
What is your job title at Oracle? And can you briefly describe your role?
ANDREW: I am an APEX Application Developer in the Application Central Engineering (ACE) vertical business of Oracle. I get to help Oracle’s internal and external clients leverage functionality and insights from licences they are already paying for. It’s a front-row seat to the business world’s cloud/SaaS transformation.
What is the culture like at Oracle?
ANDREW: The culture at Oracle is the best. They value the contributions of their employees through incredible benefits and compensation, and pay more than just lip-service to work/life balance. I feel like I am given the support I need to succeed daily.
What advice do you have for college students who are looking to break into tech?
ANDREW: For anyone wanting to try it out, go for it. If at first you feel inadequate, then you’re in good company. We all do, we’re only human. If you give yourself a chance and take that first scary step of making an appointment with Andy at Green River. It just might change your life. It did mine.
