Meet Patrick Lindsay. Patrick recently completed his bachelor’s degree in Software Development at Green River College and serves as a software engineering intern at REI. In the Q & A below, he talks about his role, the culture at REI, and shares career tips for aspiring college students who are trying to break into tech.

What led you to Green River’s Software Development program?

PATRICK: After high school, I initially intended to attend a university. However, concerns about graduating with significant debt led me to explore other options. I discovered Green River’s Software Development program, which not only was affordable but also provided real-world project experience to prepare me for internships and future career opportunities.

What is your job title at REI? And can you tell us a little bit of the kinds of projects you are working on?

PATRICK: I’m a Software Engineer Intern on the Membership team at REI. This summer, my primary project has been to enable Co-op Members with the ability to update their membership information.

Are there any fun activities that interns at REI get to participate in?

PATRICK: Absolutely! I’ve participated in several stewardship events around Seattle. We’ve also toured various REI facilities, from offices to the local distribution center. My favorite activity was kayaking with other local interns.

What is the culture at REI like?

PATRICK: The culture at REI is welcoming and supportive. They genuinely invest in your success. Colleagues are kind, always ready to assist, and there’s a healthy work-life balance. People respect each other’s time and set practical expectations. Naturally, being REI, there’s a strong emphasis on enjoying the outdoors, be it a brief walk in the park or a weekend ski trip.

Do you have any career tips for college students who are trying to break into tech?

PATRICK: For those interested in tech, dive in and give it a go. Technology is everywhere, so if you ever feel what you are doing is not your cup of tea, look for other roles or technologies that resonate with your interests. Don’t shy away from questions. It’s common to feel you’re lagging or lacking in knowledge. But continuous learning is a staple in tech. Most people are open to assisting. By seeking answers to all your questions, you’ll quickly identify areas for improvement.
