Alumni Spotlight: William Wittig talks life as a software engineer at Expedia

Meet Army veteran and Green River College graduate William Wittig (Class of 2023). After completing his bachelor’s degree in Software Development at Green River, William joined Expedia as a software development engineer. In the Q & A below, he talks about his role, the culture at Expedia, and offers tips for preparing for the world of work.

First off, what led you to Green River’s Software Development program?

WILLIAM: I initially started out in the Electrical Engineering associate degree program and decided to switch to the Software Development program after taking my first programming class and realizing that I enjoy it so much.

What is your role at Expedia?

WILLIAM: My job title is Software Development Engineer 1. For the past few months I’ve been assigned to a development team in the tax section and we make internal tools related to taxes.

What is the culture at Expedia like?

WILLIAM: The culture at Expedia Group has been great so far. Everyone I’ve met has been warm and welcoming. I can’t imagine working anywhere else.

Do you have any tips for college students on how to succeed academically and prepare for software careers?

WILLIAM: The three tips I would give would be 1) to practice time management skills, 2) work on building applications with a heavy emphasis on interacting with databases using Python, Java, and/or Scala, and 3) do HackerRank problems.
