Software development instructors at Green River College put an Agile spin on project-based learning by teaching Scrum, a set of principles and practices that help teams deliver products in short cycles, enabling fast feedback, continual improvement, and rapid adaptation to change.

Like lightning in a bottle, SDEV 355 Agile Development Methods is one course within our bachelor’s program that captures this distinct focus on Agile Scrum project-based learning. During this 12-week learning experience, students work in self-directed teams to build working software for real-world clients.

This week’s SDEV 355 project showcase, held virtually over Zoom, did not disappoint. Below, find a roundup of products that emerged from our Spring 2020 offering of the course, taught by Tina Ostrander. Congratulations to our student teams on a productive and successful quarter!

Earthquake Simulator Tool

Student team: Robert, Alex, Elijah, Evgenii

From the team: “Our ask was to develop a web tool for Green River instructor Katy Shaw that simulates an earthquake which users can take and calculate measurements to determine the earthquake’s location. This tool is meant to be used in a class lab setting to enhance hands-on learning for seismology students. Teachers and students teach and learn seismology with our earthquake simulator. Just like real seismologists, students can use graphs, charts, and measurement tools to discover the location of randomly generated earthquakes. Teachers can create class groups to record and review their students’ performance.”

Here And Now Project

Student team: Bridget, Josh, Robert, Shayna

From the team: “The Here and Now Project’s mission is to connect and empower the paralysis community in the Pacific Northwest through private support groups, community activities and larger annual gatherings. Historically, community members had access to different levels of community information depending on which social media platforms and newsletters they were the most active on.

“The Here and Now Project’s creator, Kenny Salvini, wanted to create a platform where all members had equal access to the most up to date community event information and he wanted the platform to be optimized for the UX/UI desires of the paralysis community. A mobile app was coded by team Flutter — Bridget Black, Josh Kristiansen, Robert Wood, Shayna Jamieson — for the paralysis community to take on-the-go as they exemplify the community motto, ‘Do Life’ in the here and now.”

University Tutors for Seattle Schools

Student team: Keller, Oleg, Laxmi, Dallas

From the team: “Our team worked with Elizabeth, who is a program Director of University Tutors for Seattle Schools. She mentioned that their team was having problems keeping track of their new hires as they were using excel-sheet. She also mentioned that it is time-consuming with too many instances of human error.

“The new software tool allows admins to keep track of all the information of new hires and it also reduces the amount of emails that the hiring team has to send. All the required documents that the hiring team needs can be downloaded using this software, and new hires can easily upload all the required files by uploading them.We are the agile team KOLD tutors. We worked on creating a website for UTSS that allowed them to track the progression of their tutors in the onboarding process.

“The website also allows the admin to add unlimited amounts of forms with attached documents for tutors to read or fill out. The admins are able to check/edit the tutors progression and view their submitted documents to insure accuracy. On the tutors side they are able to download/upload required documents and check off the forms they have completed.”

Mindfulness Warriors

Student team: Maureen, Olivia, Imelda

From the team: “NAMI Washington is our state branch of the National Alliance on Mental Illness. It is the nation’s largest grassroot mental health organization dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental health.

“Students expanded on a previous group’s work; creating six new applications. This will enable different categories of people in the community to find their niche of people struggling with mental health that they can assist. They also added the ability to add, edit, and delete training dates, locations, and NAMI affiliates. Affiliates will also be able to review an application as many times as is needed and to send required information instantly, instead of having to wait for faxed or mailed documents.

“We’ve spent the last three months updating the NAMI web page. The NAMI online application system gives NAMI affiliates the flexibility to approve volunteer applications and edit training details wherever they are. There are a total of ten applications in the NAMI web page, each catered to a specific group of people. The portal allows affiliates to review and approve or deny volunteer applications. Affiliates are able to add, edit, and delete training dates, locations and affiliates.”

IT Connect

Student team: Rajpreet, Chad, Taras, Marcos

From the team: “Staying up to to date with the Green River College Software bachelor’s program can be hard to do. Wouldn’t it be nice if you could visit a page and see what’s going on in the program? The IT Connect web page can help! Students in the Software Development program can view available internships, upcoming events to attend, and live blog posts on what’s happening in the program. The landing page automatically updates to show visitors the latest internships, upcoming events, and blog posts. Also, visitors can navigate the site to view more resources that can help them land a job in the software industry. For the administrator, the web page offers a lot of customization, making the site easy to maintain and update.”

GRC Syllabus Generator

Student team: Scarlett, Cody, Brian

From the team: “The faculty at Green River College wanted a way to simplify the process of generating instructor syllabi. Students worked with client and Green River instructor Tim Mason, an IT faculty member here at Green River, to create a form that populates form fields with auto-generated data based on input values. The website displays a simple form for instructors to fill out and submits to a preview page where instructors can make changes if needed and download the completed syllabus to a word document file.”

NCO

Student team: Nick, Kerrie, Ekam, David

From the team: “Administration at a local business sought to look for a replacement of a form that has been used since the 1980’s. Our team took on the challenge to replace this printed form and transform it so that it works just like the old form but without all the paper and filing cabinets. From here the NC-Online form was created. This form lives on a server and is connected to several databases that keeps track of all the records that have been entered making traceability so much easier than before and it eliminates all the paper use for the company. This form allows for trading hands seamlessly between all the users and its all saved into a database so no information is ever lost allowing the users of the form to get things done faster, smoother, easier, and efficient.”
