My Favourite Trading Tools
Education
Google — a little known, but fantastic tool that understands questions and is a gateway to the world’s knowledge.
Investopedia — fantastic resource on all sorts of topics that includes examples to bring theory to life.
eToro — follow the right people on eToro and you will gain market insights at the same time as learning effective market analysis technique.
Charting
Google Finance — Google hasn’t updated the UI in years but still a useful tool. You can build a portfolio, and then drill down into individual stocks in quite a lot of detail. The value of Google Finance is how data rich their tool is. Be aware an mysterious big change is coming mid-November 2017.
Investing.com — the UI can be overwhelming, there’s a lot going on! The charting options are rich, and I particularly like how the tool interprets patterns automatically.
TradingView — one of the best tools out there, extremely rich capabilities with a great UI. Probably the best charting tool out there.
News & Research
Hackernews — a great place to find news about tech companies before most of the rest of the market.
Twitter — another place to get stock news hot off the press.
TipRanks — most of the info from TipRanks is already available in the “Rearch” section of support stocks, but the site itself has some additional capabilities (thanks for the reminder @digitalr0cket).
MarketWatch — a bit tabloid-y but their news is timely, and some of their content is very good. Just try to ignore the extremely dramatic articles.
SeekingAlpha — some of the best news summary articles come out of SeekingAlpha. Unfortunately there’s a lot of crud too. I recommend setting up a portfolio and then SA will the relevant news for you.
Bloomberg — one of the older fellas but an amazing resource for news across the board.
Yahoo Finance — I recently started using Yahoo Finance again on a recommendation from @Other_Xav. Years ago I abandoned it in favour of other tools but I’m loving the UI and capabilities, especially as we approach earnings.
Google Finance — already mentioned in the list above, but Google Finance is great in that it provides information based on context e.g. it aggregates news about a particular stock and overlays this on that stock’s chart. You have all types of info about a company in one place. Other great features include “Trends” and “Sector Summary” which allow you to find opportunities easily.
eToro — again, there’s a lot of information that can be garnered from the eToro community. Follow the right people and you’ll have your own personal news curators!
Aggregators — take your pick here: Google News, Feedly etc. Sign up to one of these services and then add a few topics that you find interesting. Some of these services are quite smart and will learn your preferences, but the most important requirement is to have a huge amount of recent news that you can skim quickly.
