Thanksgiving in Granada

Four goals for Thanksgiving Day in Granada: go running, cook a Thanksgiving dinner on the two burners in the small kitchen in my Airbnb apartment, pick Pat up from the bus stop in Granada, see a flamenco show.

First on the list: run up, up, up. The Albaicín neighborhood where I was staying was build on the steep hills overlooking the rest of Granada. So I went through the winding streets to find a great network of trails in the forested hills beyond the city. It was beautiful!

I didn’t have to run far before I was looking over a tiny toy Alhambra and sweeping views of Granada.

Second: improvisational cooking with ingredients Mahalia and I picked up the night before from a collections of shops including the Ecotienda. I can’t stop saying that word. Ecotienda, ecotienda.

Chicken, stock that would later become stuffing to go with the pan-fried sweet potatoes, kale salad, and a weird dried cranberry and pomegranate seed sauce.

Third: Pat arrived! Mahalia and I scooped him up from the bus stop outside of the Cathedral downtown. Since we didn’t have cell phone service in Spain, it seemed like a miracle that our plans to meet on a street corner worked out. But then again, that’s always how things used to work.

Fourth: it was a quick meal because we had a flamenco show to catch at 9:30. So we left the dishes in the sink and hustled back down the hill to a small bar in a cave on the main drag between downtown and the Albaicín. We squeezed in with many of Mahalia’s housemates/classmates and a bunch of others to watch the show.

Flamenco is a traditional gypsy art form that has been appropriated by mainstream Spanish culture. Gypsies themselves are still marginalized today. A story worth ruminating on any day, but especially on Thanksgiving.

Pat was a real trooper after flying forward 9 hours in time. He barely stayed awake for this show, but he did! We went home immediately afterwards and crashed. This trip has been about not sleep much so far.
