I’m Beginning to Think Elon Musk’s Improv Team Isn’t Making Any of This Up

That whole bit about self-driving vehicle safety protocols felt a bit rehearsed

A 2016 video that Tesla used to promote its self-driving technology was staged to show capabilities like stopping at a red light and accelerating at a green light that the system did not have, according to testimony by a senior engineer. […] To create the video, the Tesla used 3D mapping on a predetermined route from a house in Menlo Park, California, to Tesla’s then-headquarters in Palo Alto, he said. — Reuters, Jan. 17, 2023

When I saw a targeted ad on Facebook telling me that Elon Musk was performing live improv comedy in the Bay Area, I figured how bad could it be? It’s a free improv show: Expect the worst and you’ll never be disappointed. To that end, I also expected to see some actual improvised comedy, but I’m beginning to suspect the show I witnessed was fully rehearsed.

The evening started improv-y enough, with Elon Musk and his five t-shirt-and-jeans-wearing teammates jogging in and clapping to the chorus of Macklemore’s “Can’t Hold Us.” (Elon then proceeded to explain that their t-shirts were $300 a piece and their jeans were also “really expensive.”)
