Original Story: According to Norse mythology, when Asgard first came into being, a mason (or builder) bet the gods he could single-handedly construct a defensive wall within three seasons in exchange for the sun, moon, and Freya (the Goddess of Love, Fertility, War, Gold, and altering the future). The mason only asked that his stallion could assist him. The gods agreed to the bet, but they quickly learned they were being hustled: the stallion had super-strength and greatly increased the speed of the construction. Running out of options, they begged Loki, the trickster god, to find a way into slowing down the mason.

Without telling anyone his plan, Loki transformed into a mare, drove the stallion wild with lust, and the two ran off into the woods, preventing the wall from being finished on-time. The plan worked, and when the gods discovered the mason was a rival Giant, they made him finish the wall without any compensation.

Months later, Loki came back with an eight-legged baby horse (or foal) he birthed named Sleipnir. Odin, Loki’s adopted-father, claimed him. It later matured into such a super-horse that it was fast enough to run on air and water, and even take trips down to Hel. The mason’s…
