Origin Story: In Scandinavian folklore, The Sandman is said to sprinkle sand or dust on or into the eyes of children at night to bring on sleep and dreams. The grit or “sleep” in one’s eyes upon waking is the supposed result of his work the previous night.

Tinker Bell is a fictional character from J. M. Barrie’s 1904 play Peter Pan, and has appeared in a variety of film and television adaptations of the Peter Pan stories. She mends pots and kettles, has extremes in her personality, and her speech consists of the sounds of a tinkling bell. Though not originally written within a traditional fairy tale, she has cemented herself into children’s imaginations more strongly than most characters (especially fairies) in folklore.
