Andy Ayim is the Managing Director of Backstage London, a 3-month program designed to give underrepresented founders the support they need to reach their next critical milestone.
The 5 companies joining us for our first ever cohort of Backstage London are as diverse, energetic, and vibrant as the city we call home. London was chosen as one of the inaugural cities for Backstage Accelerator — the first outside of the US — due to its culture; its startup ecosystem with its maturity and potential; London’s geography; the energy and excitement of the city; and the huge amount of talent and underestimated founders.
Without further ado, we are excited to announce our 5 companies with incredible founders and teams joining us.
Afrocenchix
Natural, organic, and vegan products for Afro and curly hair, started by Joycelyn Mate and Rachael Twumasi-Corson. They sell direct-to-consumers as well as being featured in shops including Whole Foods Market.
gal-dem
A media company for and by women and non-binary people of colour, started by Liv Little. They have online and print versions of their highly read magazine. Last year, they did a takeover of The Guardian weekend.
Tambua Health
A medical technology company turning any smartphone into a powerful, non-invasive screening tool that helps diagnose Lower Respiratory Tract Infections across Africa. Founded by Kenyan duo Lewis Wanjohi and Daniel Warui.
Trim-It
The first app-powered mobile barbershop, delivering the highest quality haircuts straight to your doorstep in a high-tech barbershop in a van. The company was founded by Darren Tenkorang.
Vitae London
A stunning watch brand that uses part of their profits to support education for children in Sub-Saharan Africa. The company, started by William Adoasi, has an influential following including the likes of Sir Richard Branson.
