Body of North Carolina Man Recovered After Fall at Grand Canyon

The body of 20-year-old Abel Joseph Mejia from Hickory, North Carolina, was recovered after a fatal fall at Grand Canyon National Park. Authorities reported that Mejia fell approximately 400 feet from the Pipe Creek Vista around 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday. His body was found about a quarter-mile from the overlook.

Investigation

Park officials stated that Mejia accidentally fell while near the edge of the rim. The National Park Service and the Coconino County Medical Examiner's Office are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Safety Measures Encouraged

In light of this tragedy, park staff urge visitors to prioritise safety. They recommend staying on designated trails, maintaining a distance of at least 6 feet from the rim's edge, and adhering to railings and fences at overlooks.
