An officer with the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) has been temporarily relieved of field duties after a video surfaced showing him punching a handcuffed man during a traffic stop in Watts on July 28, 2024. The incident has sparked outrage and calls for accountability from community activists and Mitchell’s family.

Incident Details

The video, recorded by a bystander, shows 28-year-old Alexander Donta Mitchell handcuffed with his hands behind his back, asking, "What did I do?" just before an officer punches him in the face. Witnesses reported that Mitchell was not resisting arrest, raising concerns about the use of force by police.

Community Reaction

Civil rights activist Najee Ali condemned the officer's actions, stating, "He was not a threat." Ali called for the officer to face criminal charges, emphasising that the incident reflects ongoing issues of excessive force in the Black community. Mitchell's mother, An'tneal Harris, expressed her outrage, asserting that her son did not deserve such treatment.

LAPD Response

The LAPD confirmed that the incident is under investigation and that the involved officer has been removed from field duties. The department stated that officers were conducting a traffic stop on a double-parked vehicle when the altercation occurred.

However, the police union defended the officer's actions, claiming that the use of force was justified due to Mitchell's alleged resistance.

Mitchell was arrested for obstructing and resisting arrest but was later released with a misdemeanour citation. His attorney, Brad Gage, plans to pursue legal action, asserting that the officer's force was uncalled for and unjustified.

Community leaders continue to call for accountability and justice in this troubling incident.
