Power outages and flooding are affecting the Triad region of North Carolina as Tropical Storm Debby drifts toward central North Carolina. The storm has already caused significant disruptions, with many residents facing challenges due to severe weather conditions.

Storm Progression

As of 5 a.m. on Thursday, the centre of Tropical Storm Debby was moving inland over South Carolina. The National Hurricane Center has warned of major flood threats not only for the Carolinas but also for western Virginia. The storm’s centre is expected to

cross the Piedmont area around midnight, bringing heavy rain and strong winds.

Weather Warnings

Flood Watches are currently in effect for several counties, including Alamance, Forsyth, Guilford, and Rockingham. Additionally, Davie County is under a Wind Advisory. The National Weather Service predicts wind gusts of 40–50 mph in central North Carolina, particularly within the heavier rain bands. There is also an isolated tornado threat that could extend into the Piedmont later in the day.

Expected Rainfall

Heavy rainfall is anticipated, with totals of 4–6 inches expected across the Piedmont region. Some areas, especially in the west, could see rainfall amounts reach as high as 8–9 inches. This significant rainfall is contributing to the flooding conditions reported throughout the Triad.

Power Outages and Road Closures

Tens of thousands of power outages have been reported as a direct result of the storm. Many roads have been closed due to flooding, making travel hazardous for residents. Emergency services are on alert as they respond to incidents related to the storm.

Future Weather Outlook

Rain is expected to taper off by midday Friday, but the Flood Watch will remain in effect through Friday night. While clouds and showers may linger in the morning, there is a possibility of sunshine later in the afternoon, with highs reaching near 87°F.

Looking ahead, the weekend forecast indicates drier conditions, with mostly sunny to partly cloudy skies. High temperatures are expected to be in the upper 80s on Saturday and lower 80s on Sunday.

More stable weather is anticipated for the following week, with highs in the lower 80s and a chance of rain on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Residents are advised to stay updated on the storm’s progress and take necessary precautions as Tropical Storm Debby drifts toward North Carolina.
