Former President Donald Trump sparked controversy at the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) convention in Chicago on July 31, 2024, by questioning Vice President Kamala Harris’s racial identity.

During a Q&A session, Trump stated, “I didn’t know she was Black until a number of years ago when she happened to turn Black.” He claimed Harris, who is of Jamaican and Indian descent, was primarily promoting her Indian heritage before this alleged change. His comments drew immediate backlash from attendees and political figures.

White House Response

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre condemned Trump's remarks as "repulsive" and "insulting," emphasising that no one has the right to define another's identity. Vice President Harris, addressing supporters in Atlanta, challenged Trump to a debate, stating, “He won’t debate, but he seems to have a lot to say about me.”

NABJ's Controversial Decision

Trump's invitation to speak at the NABJ convention was met with mixed reactions. Some members criticised the decision, leading to the resignation of co-chair Karen Attiah, who felt the organisation should not platform Trump without consultation. NABJ President Ken Lemon defended the choice, stating it aligned with the organisation's tradition of inviting candidates for open dialogue.

Political Implications

Trump's comments come as both he and Harris prepare for a heated presidential race, with Harris gaining support among Black voters. As the presumptive Democratic nominee, she is set to campaign across several states in the coming weeks.

Meanwhile, Trump continues to face scepticism from many in the Black community regarding his commitment to their issues.
