One of Grey Matter’s goals is to build a music community with tools that can better support artists. On average, artists are making a measly $.004-.007 per stream, which means hundreds of thousands of streams each month are necessary just to reach minimum wage.

Now add to that the recent loss of musicians’ primary income stream — live music — and you’ve got a serious problem. It’s no secret that COVID-19 is damaging the music industry, especially musicians, venues, small labels, promoters, and other nightlife workers.

The outpouring of community support and collective action that’s happening is incredible, but it’s essential that it carries on. We all have a vested interest in ensuring artists can continue to make the music we love, so let’s support that art. We hope Grey Matter’s beta program helps keep the good work rolling.

Grey Matter’s Beta program

We’ve been building this program out for the past couple months and want to be sure that all our testers understand how this works. At the bottom, you’ll find an FAQ that we’ll continue to update throughout the beta period. As always, if you have any questions, don’t hesitate to reach out.

Join our beta here.

Here’s how it works

In exchange for your feedback and testing, we’ll contribute $20 to any artist, label, venue, or promoter — in your name.

What you do

  • Choose an artist, label, venue, or promoter (it can be anyone at all!).
  • Create an account when the beta becomes available on app stores (soon!).
  • Share 5+ tracks (any tracks at all) in the app per week for three weeks.
  • Share feedback through our in-app feedback form (more details here).

What we do

  • Contribute $20 to the artist, label, venue, or promoter of your choice.
  • Learn from your feedback to improve and grow Grey Matter.

FAQ

Can I actually choose anyone to support?

Yep! Anyone. Ideally, though, artists that could really use that support.

How are you paying these people?

Great question. For now, it will happen on an ad hoc basis depending on the receiver’s preferred method. But in the future we intend to have an in-app system that will enable these types of contributions within Grey Matter.
