[Ed. Update Feb 15… Google just announced Gemini 1.5… the feature which was probably just late... Is a massive context window. Initially it’ll be 128k and will move to 1 MB. Today most people are using 4K in chat.openai.com … we are guessing that the change in context window will drive immense capability and emergent behavior. On this experiment coming… 💥]
In a world that’s moving fast. AI helps and it hurts. The big announcement of the day is the introduction of Google Gemini a free version and an advanced version at $20 a month USD. Now we have the money game it’s totally clear to me now that their pricing this as a utility per person and the interconnection of Google Gemini to your workspace documents and drive is a killer app that’s priced at 20 bucks a month. That’s less than a cup of coffee a week and it’s a powerful intern that knows about your email and the last four reports that you wrote. (An intern actually listens to you).
I think that Google has added another 10 billion dollar business ++ to their empire. And if one is in the Google universe you are buying this product if you are a professional, and, it’s a subscription so it’s a cost to your life forever. Let’s call it “The Google AI Tax”.
It’s not that the app itself is the killer it’s the integration your information and the rest of the internet AND the Chatbot app. If youu’ve been using Google like I have for the last 10 or 15 years you have thousands and thousands of emails, over a 100,000 photos and thousands of documents that you saved in your G-drive.
Other than the browser or stupid interfaces we now have ai assistance to process and transform information, to compare it and to run mental models against it.
And yes in Google you are locked in.
I think you’re going to hear a lot more about this in the next coming months as OpenAi and Microsoft’s strategy, opens up. Don’t forget that anthropic and Amazon are in the wings trying to figure things out as well.
