The Open AI Developer conference was this week. Everyone should watch the Key Note Presentation with Sam Altman… It’s one for the ages and as important as the Steve Jobs’ introduction of the iPhone in my opinion. Every CEO in the world should watch and learn this presentation because it is a lesson in leadership and communication. To watch the obvious negotiation with Microsoft’s Satya Nadella makes me grin ear to ear — it was such a joust!

Key Ideas Introduced:

  • A lot got done in 1 year — the models, the APIs, the engines, multimodel — “ChatGPT can see, hear and speak”… it’s inherent that it can think with the aid of humans
  • What Next — 6 Things: GPT4 Turbo(128k), Custom Models, Assitant APIs, Copyright Shield, GPTs (Agents) IDE, A Marketplace Economy.
  • They really moved the dial, dropping the cost of creating and running models significantly.
  • They show love for one of their main customers — software developers. That is a real choice. What other platform vendor can promise 100 Million weekly early adopter users of AI? Plus $500 of OpenAI credits to tease the Gold Rush No doubt.
  • I love when CEO’s Demo…. that sets the bar in this industry. Sam made a GPT in the session and got a laugh too.

I believe they have left behind all AI Frontier Model and Platform Developers in the creation of a platform for developers to create and earn money with OpenAI dedication. There is a democratization of programming, moving the act from coding to the development of systems with language… logical language is helpful, but literally, any language or discussion will do to start creating something that looks like useful software.

Multimodality is happening at a lot more levels than is disclosed in Altman’s keynote speech — ChatGPT and Agents do more than just see, hear, speak and write in multiple languages. It can use tools and access fresh data in the real world. It can use functions available from your current software faithfully. Even more will emerge.

The evolution of these tiny brains is moving at an exponential pace and every developer is involved. This part reminds me a lot of how Visual Basic caused an explosion of simple development that changed software development forever. But — this is magnitudes larger in scope… think about 100 Million Users. Every. Week.

Here are some big-picture predictions based on the impact of these announcements. Some initial thinking really.

  1. Democratization and Disruption in the Software Market: The launch of customizable GPTs by OpenAI will democratize AI usage, enabling individuals and businesses without technical prowess to build and deploy AI-powered tools. We can expect a proliferation of niche applications, as everyday entrepreneurs and creators develop GPTs for an array of uses. This will likely disrupt traditional software markets, similar to how Shopify democratized e-commerce and WordPress did for blogging, by lowering barriers to entry and shaking up the competitive landscape.
  2. Economic Opportunities and Marketplaces: The creation of a GPT Store is a strategic move akin to Apple’s App Store. It will not only serve as a discovery platform for GPTs but also as a new economic ecosystem. Verified builders will monetize their creations, sparking a gold rush of sorts, as we saw with mobile apps. Some GPTs will likely become must-have tools, creating newfound wealth for their developers. This could give rise to ‘GPTpreneurs’ — individuals and teams dedicated to creating and refining these AI applications.
  3. Privacy and Ethical Concerns Will Intensify: With GPTs performing increasingly complex tasks, concerns about privacy and the ethical use of AI will grow. OpenAI’s mention of privacy and safety reflects an awareness of these issues, but as these AI agents become more embedded in daily life and business operations, they will challenge existing regulatory frameworks. We can anticipate heated debates and potential backlashes, similar to the scrutiny faced by big tech companies. It will be crucial for OpenAI to navigate these waters with transparency and robust safety measures to maintain public trust.

These predictions hinge on the ability of OpenAI to maintain a balance between innovation and responsible AI governance, ensuring that the expansion into customizable AI does not outpace the societal capacity to manage its implications.
