Since the closing of barbers and salons, many people are experimenting with cutting their own hair and as long as you keep it simple, you should be able to look presentable and not completely butcher it. Most people are still working and video chatting instead of meeting in person, so you definitely want to look sharp and professional with a fresh haircut or hairstyle. If you are not feeling adventurous enough to grab a pair of scissors, play around with hairstyles and products that work with your hair as it is.

If you’re feeling courageous enough to want to cut your own hair, here’s how to do it:

First, make sure you have a clipper, a comb, shears, and a mirror that allows you to see all angles of your head. Watch various YouTube tutorials so you can get a better idea of how to go about this for the best results.

Self Haircut Style Tips for Men

If you want to cut, trim, or simply clean up your hair, focus on the back of your neck, sideburns and facial hair. Do not wet your hair because you won’t know how long it truly is and you may cut it much shorter than you intended to. When you use a clipper, start with the highest clip and work your way down. It’s the most reliable way to not make mistakes.

Put a comb underneath the trimmer and do not give too much tension here. You can try leaving it longer in the back and styling it with inspiration from the 80s.

If someone is doing it for you ask them to use the highest setting because it cuts the least amount of hair length. If you have longer length at the top, use a scissor over comb technique to trim it.

If you maintain a short haircut, it is definitely more difficult to do this on your own. Your best bet is to shave it all off or to embrace your puffy hair.

If you or the person who’s trimming your hair makes a minor mistake, remember that it will grow back. You have all the time in the world now, so take advantage and take your time with the process! You can even pamper yourself and use a facial mask after you shave.

Self Haircut Style Tips for Women

Bangs are the most difficult to cut yourself especially if you don’t have the right tools, so it may be your best bet to style your hair differently. If you have fringe, part your hair down the middle so the bangs frame either side of your face. You can even use a hair iron and style them with waves and push them to the side. You will go from having bangs to side-parted bangs.

Avoid bleaching your hair, and instead, use a toner kit and root touchups to keep up with your hair color. Bleach will damage your hair and the results will not look like what you want them to. Toner and a root touch up will not damage your hair.

If you must cut your hair, wash it and make sure it is free from knots. Gather your hair and brush it up to the top of the head like a very high ponytail and twist it. Pinch your hair between the index and middle fingers and then cut it. Note that larger cuts will create heavy layering and an angled haircut.

If you have curly hair, trim it fully dried, and do not trim a lot because small snips go a long way. You’ll want to trim it from the center of the top of your head. Take a curl and hold it upward as far as its length goes and snip it to your desired length. Follow the length of that piece as you cut the rest of your hair to its length.

Though you may be having a panic attack because your bangs are too long, or you desperately need your hair dyed or a fade touch up, this isn’t going to last forever. Soon enough you can go back to your normal self-care routine and get your hair properly taken care of. In the meantime, use a hair mask with household items such as using 1 egg white and juice from half a lemon and smooth it over your hair from roots to end. Leave it on for 45 minutes and rise it with lukewarm water. Also, hats are always in style, so if you are struggling with the way your quarantine hair looks, cover it up.
