Almost every well respected RPG contains some sort of equipment: appearal, weapons, utilities, etc. GO is going to be no different, however, we want equipment to make sense and walking around in bulky armour certainly doesn’t make a whole lot of sense in the GO universe. This is the far future where ammunition doesn’t come in the form of silly ballistics. Energy weapons are the new type of hurt and your puny little armour isn’t going to stop thousands of watts of raw, pure energy. Shields are the new and only way of protection.

BEGIN TRANSMISSION

This is a short interruption from our sponser. Feeling a little vulnerable? Busa Shield Tech. has got you covered! Never leave home without a little protection. For as low as 100k Cr. you’ll be carrying your own Personal Shield Generator. Get one now from one of our certified dealers.

END TRANSMISSION

Every player in the GO universe will be carrying a Personal Shield Generator for their own protection that has the ability to stop incoming high powered energy projectiles. Shields aren’t infinite and can be depleted. Once depleted you better start running, for the end of your life is neigh.

Grid Online will not feature armour in the traditional sense but rather specialised clothing containing various different modifications. Clothing will not protect you but instead may provide bonuses to stats or abilities. For example a trenchcoat that enhances the SMG skill by 20 points and contains a modification slot, which may be customised to further enhance your abilities.

Energy Capacitors

Shields, weapons, utilities; they all need to draw power from somewhere. As explained in a previous post we don’t want to introduce mystical powers such as mana or other forms of nonsensical resources.

Energy capacitors are items which provide energy. Energy is GO’s resource system that powers all your peripherals and abilities. You spend energy to perform actions such as Charged Shot. Once the power is spent you will slowly regain it over time. Weapons, shields, certain utilities and even some abilities (think of buffs) may reserve energy and thus reduce your available pool of energy that you can spend on other actions such as instant or channeled abilities. It will be up to you to manage your energy carefully. Larger shields will require more energy, leaving less room for quickly bursting out damage. It’s therefore vital that you think carefully on how you build your character. Quick and nimble; savouring your energy for bursting down opponents fast. Stand firm and deal sustained damage; reserving more energy for shields and certain buffs.

Demanding too much power from the EC results in a malfunctioning capacitor, rendering you unable to draw power for a certain time. This means that you may overcharge; giving you the ability to deliver one last desperate blow at the cost of locking yourself out temporarily.

Weapons will be similar to shields as they, too, reserve a portion of your energy from your EC as they will continuously draw power. Weapons come in various form and sizes and each weapon will draw a different amount of energy determined by their rate of fire, damage and modifications. Weapons may contain modification slots, which, for example, may change the damage type of the weapon or increases its rate of fire.

Energy Capacitors are also a form of equipment that require upgrading as your abilities demand more power. The equilibrium between your abilities and your capacitor to provide the necessary power scales to progress with your character’s level. We want to give you the ability to customise your character the way you see fit; your character should match your play style.

This system is unique in its own way, providing you the means to customise and adapt to certain situations.
