Meet Hannah, Jonathan, Imogen + Luca. Jonathan is behind Brand New School, an award-winning studio that produces super innovative design, animation, interactive media, and film content. He and his wife Hannah welcomed us into their beautiful TriBeCa apartment to talk dinner with them and their two children, Imogen, 6 1/2, and Luca, 2 1/2.
1. What’s for dinner?
Grilled skirt steak (ordered it already soaking in Korean marinade from Fresh Direct and prepared it on a grill pan), Tomato Rice made with brown rice and peas (recipe from It’s All Good), Mexican Chopped Salad (recipe from It’s All Good), a little turkey chili for Luca, some extra steamed broccoli and bowls of berries for the kids.
2. What’s the usual dinner routine for these guys?
During the week, the kids usually eat together at 5pm, and we feed them food we cook that night or repurposed leftovers from the weekend when we do lots of cooking. On the weekend, Jonathan normally makes a big breakfast, and we all eat together at home, and we eat dinner together early at home too. Last Sunday, he made a roast chicken, snow peas, and French fries, using blue potatoes. It was a big hit.
3. What’s are the kids’ favorite dinners?
Imogen loves her father’s steak tacos and pasta. She does not, for the record, like leftovers very much. Luca is a major meat eater. He loves burgers and sausages, a total carnivore.
4. Ever go out for dinner?
Not as a family. Sometimes Jonathan will take the kids on dates for a father-son or father-daughter meal.
5. Do the kids like to cook?
Imogen has an after-school cooking class once a week. She also might be Ina Garten’s biggest fan.
6. Did you grow up eating dinner with your families?
HANNAH: Yes. I’m one of four, and I grew up in England without much money, but we ate together as a family regularly. My favorite meal was fish and chips from the takeaway, which we didn’t have often.
JONATHAN: When I was really young, I ate with my family regularly. My favorite meal was this crazy chicken and broccoli casserole that my mother made from a Palm Springs cookbook. It was so good. Growing up in southern California, we barbecued a lot, which I now do upstate sometimes and Imogen is my assistant.
