Trump’s Second Term Gifts Liberals a Dark Night of the Soul
A silver lining of the Trumpian apocalypse
A Christian watches in horror at the end of time, as an alien God straddles over humanity, pouring nine-tenths of all astonished, incredulous persons into a lake of fire, equating them with demons.
And with Christ-like insight, the Christian thinks they deserve that fate. That’s what most folks deserve for squandering their spiritual potential, for being petty, selfish consumers collectively ravaging the planet’s ecosystems, or for striving to overcome poverty to acquire that vaunted middle or upper-class status.
That’s what it feels like to be this Canadian waking up to the news that Donald Trump was re-elected president.
Americans deserve that apocalypse, that degradation and humiliation, including the Trump voters and the nonvoters and the Kamala Harris voters. Yes, the Harris voters too deserve Trump for not having demanded over the last few decades that the corporate Democratic Party address the country’s structural problems. That defense of the neoliberal status quo since the 1990s under Bill Clinton’s triangulations with Reaganomics paved the way for ever crazier rounds of right-wing populism, from George W.
