Our new YouTube video with Pam Bean from Montana Fair Housing is required viewing for anyone who wants to find housing, rent an apartment, or buy a home — which is all of us, at some point.

Montana Fair Housing is a statewide nonprofit that provides education about housing discrimination, and can help tenants bring complaints against landlords and other housing professionals. Pam is one of Montana’s foremost experts on housing discrimination, and the video includes a lot of great information.

One portion of the video of particular interest to students is at 12:47 and deals with whether landlords can advertise “no students.” Pam’s response:

Now, should a housing provider have practices saying no students? In our opinion that is likely an age violation. What we would do is take a look at the population at the university and get some stats about the age group. And that’s generally in stats I’ve looked at 18 to 24. And then you can proceed and move forward with a state complaint based on age.

Just like this blog, the content of the video is legal information only, not advice. But there is a lot of great information that can benefit anyone seeking to rent or purchase a home, as well as landlords and real estate professionals.
