Fall 2020 will be a unique first semester, to say the least. Whether it’s your first time on campus or you are coming back for your last semester the University of Montana is working tirelessly to make sure we can all be happy and safe this fall.

New Student Orientation

Devin Carpenter had this to say about this year’s New Student Orientation “The University of Montana is excited to be welcoming new students to campus for our in-person New Student Orientation program Aug. 17–18, 2020. Things may look a little different this year, but one thing we know for sure is that during orientation you will get to meet a small group of your peers as well as current UM students, you will become familiar with campus and the many resources available to you, you will hear from UM faculty and get to know your academic department, and much more. We have a variety of exciting activities planned for you, and we can’t wait to welcome you to campus in a few weeks!”

Living in Campus Housing

UM Housing had this to say about students returning to campus:

When students return to campus in the fall things will look a little different, but the focus on community and a supportive environment in the UM Housing facilities will remain the same. Resident Assistants (residence halls), Community Assistants (University Villages), and Village Assistants (Lewis & Clark Village) will provide programming opportunities in a variety of formats, adhering to social distancing guidelines. They along with the Community Development Coordinators and Area Coordinators will be there to assist students with anything from student success resources and mental health resources, to where the best studying place is on campus and where you can find the best food in town. As you get settled in be sure to check out the Programming and Activities Council for your area and get involved in your community.

UM, Housing believes it is a shared responsibility of those working in, living in, or visiting UM Housing to take appropriate steps to protect one’s own and others’ health and safety. UM Housing expects staff and residents to understand their role in reducing the potential spread of COVID-19 and hold themselves to high standards. Social distancing, wearing masks, and other personal mitigation actions are to protect the people someone comes in contact with. Residents and staff are responsible for adhering to required health and safety practices and protocols.

UM Housing welcomes you to the Griz Family! We hope that your first semester is a great experience. Please reach out to any of our staff if you have any questions. We would love to help. Go Griz!

Associated Student of the University of Montana (ASUM)

Here is a message form President Gregory and Vice President Flanagan on what ASUM has to offer new students.

Welcome, Griz! We are ASUM, your student government. As you transition into our campus during these unprecedented times we want you to know: ASUM is here for you. As your student government, we represent you on a university level by advocating for your needs and interests in discussions that span the entire campus. We also represent you at a state level by standing up for student needs at the state legislative session and various Board of Regents meetings. Outside of representation, we provide student services as well! Want to start a student group? Come to us and we can fund your student-led initiative! We also provide child-care, legal services, renter resources. Among those agencies, we also oversee ASUM Transportation, ASUM Sustainability, the UM Food Pantry, KBGA College Radio, and your University newspaper: the Montana Kaimin. For more information on any of that, please check out our website at umt.edu/asum. We are so happy you are here and we can’t wait to work with you! Go Griz!

Healthy Griz Kits

To help keep us safe and healthy this year, all UM students will be receiving Healthy Griz Kits. New Students will get theirs during Freshman orientation and all other students will be able to pick them up at other locations by swiping their Griz Card. These kits will include two reusable facemasks, a refillable thing of hand sanitizer, a refillable bottle of disinfectant, and a microfiber towel. Don’t forget to check your student email so you know were to get your kit. Curry Health Center will also be hard at work providing the campus community with amazing medical care just like always!
