What to do in Missoula during the Summer.

After weeks stuck inside, I’m certain we would all enjoy some good (socially distanced) summer fun. Lucky for us we live in a beautiful valley that offers plenty of fun.

Ice Cream Trip

One of my favorite things to do during the summer is going to get ice cream. While this may be a very traditional thing, why should we mess with tradition? My two favorite spots in town are the Big Dipper and Sweet Peaks. They both offer unique flavors and are in great locations. I recommend walking or biking to the location. Bonus points if you see people floating the river or surfing on Brennan’s wave.

Quick Trip Down the River

I have to admit I have yet to float the Clark Fork but I have heard it is an amazing time. You can rent inner tubes for the Campus Recreation as well. Nothing will feel better on a hot July day than being in the water so make sure to get a group of friends together for this traditional Missoula activity. Rafting and kayaking are also great options especially when the river is at a higher elevation. The Blackfoot River is another location close to Missoula.

Go on a Hike

Missoula is definitely not lacking in hiking trails. Whether it’s the hike to the M or Waterworks hill you are certain to see many people up in the hills this summer. If scaling multiple switchbacks is too intense for you there is always Kim Williams Trail that takes you along the Clark Fork River.

Go to Historic Fort Missoula

Fort Missoula off of Reserve offers so much history. In World War II it served as an internment camp for leaders of Japanese communities in the United States. Unfortuenly they will be closed for tours till at least June 1st but you can always walk around that grounds and look at the amazing buildings. Fort Missoula Regional Park also is home to outdoor workout equipment which is definitely the perfect way to get your workout in.

Go to Garden of One Thousand Buddhas

Okay, so this one is a little outside of Missoula but well worth the drive. Right outside of Arlee, MT sits this peaceful garden. It is a nice walk that anyone can take. There is also a gift shop on-site so you can send something nice to those friends you won’t see for a while. On your way back to Missoula make sure to stop at the Huckleberry Patch for a sweet treat.

Drive up Pattee Canyon

One of my all-time favorite activities on the rainy summer days is to drive up Patte Canyon with a podcast or music playing. If you follow the road for as long as you can it will take you out to East Missoula. It’s an amazing drive and is the best way to get out of the house on a rainy day. Just make sure to be a good neighbor and follow the speed limit.

Roxy Movies at Allegiance

Take your friends and family to Allegiance Field and watch a movie under the stars on Thursdays. Buy tickets beforehand at www.gopaddleheads.com. They have many different options for socially distanced seating to make sure is everyone is safe while still being able to get out and enjoy a movie.

Farmers Market

Meet up with all your friends downtown at Cara’s Park for the Farmers Market on the weekend. Grab some breakfast and take a walk and look through all the venues. You are certain to find something amazing (or a few things). This year’s Farmers Market might look a little different it will still be the same great Missoula tradition!

Seeley Lake Trip

About an hour outside of Missoula is Seeley Lake. It’s a great location for outdoor enthusiasts. If you are a mountain biker there are miles of trails and roads that will allow you to explore the beautiful Swan and Mission mountain ranges. Don’t forget to pack your fishing pole to catch a nice fresh dinner.
