The Funds Will Go To Resource 501(c)4 Organizations Led By Women of Color, Low-Income Women, And Transgender People

Groundswell Action Fund extends much appreciation to Battery Powered for their generous support, which will resource 501(c)4 organizations led by Black women, women of color, low-income women, and transgender oeople of color in order to amplify the voices of those most excluded from our democracy.

Battery Powered is a member-funded program and innovative philanthropic giving model of The Battery, a private social club based in San Francisco. The program is designed to help members explore themes, share ideas, and activate their generosity to spark lasting change. Each trimester, the Battery Powered community tackles a new theme, representative of some of the biggest issues of our time. Over the course of the trimester they hear from leading experts and organizations in the field and on the front lines of some of society’s toughest challenges. At the conclusion of each theme, members vote to financially fund a selection of organizations.

“Can we create a democracy that is truly ‘of the people, by the people and for the people’?” asks Colleen Gregerson, Executive Director of Battery Powered. “Yes,” she continues. “The organizations we honor today with Battery Powered awards are working tenaciously to ensure that everyone is counted equally, voting is free and easy, our representatives look like the communities they represent, and they react to public opinion over special interests. We are thrilled to support these organizations leading the way to people-centered politics.”

Groundswell Action Fund is the largest fund in the United States that is centering 501(c)4 work led by Black women, women of color, low-income women, and transgender people of color who are building lasting political power in their communities, fighting to win on crucial progressive issues, and advancing solidarity-based electoral strategies that expand access to democratic participation for all people.

“Groundswell Action Fund was founded on a simple but revolutionary premise: those who are most excluded from our democracy are the visionaries of an inclusive democracy and should be at the center of actualizing it. We are deeply honored to have received one of Battery Powered’s largest grant awards and applaud the Battery Power community for living into its name by understanding that fueling the strength and capacity of Black women and women of color organizations is critical to powering change,” says Charlene Sinclair, the Director of Groundswell Action Fund.
