Sketching
With every design, there must also be a prototype to test the design and make sure it works as intended. This past week, our group started working on making our prototype sketches into a physical model, using cardboard boxes to make the stand. The goals we focused on were to have a simple and cost-efficient stand with improved accessibility. One area we focused on was the angle of the tray that carries the newspaper. We surveyed a few people with different heights about which angle made the newspaper the most accessible to them as they are standing. Through the collected data, we then decide on a 30-degree angle and even did some geometry for calculating the wedges to make sure the surface carrying the newspapers is propped in that elevation.
After making the skeletal design of the stand, we moved on to focusing on how to make the appearance look more appealing. We were conflicted between choosing a more eye-pleasing color and a bright color that would not blend in with the surroundings. After much debate, we settled on either turquoise blue or bright orange. The stand will be spray painted to make it more attractive, which we will be done during class this upcoming Wednesday. We hope to have the prototype ready by the end of the week so that it could be tested. Although the stand does not look exactly like our final design, it will serve as a good model as to how well we were able to implement the five basic design principles mentioned last week.
