GroupRoom now offers its Pro users the ability upload giant “room” images to create new larger spaces (expo halls, offices, lounges, beach scenes etc).

Rather than stretching the background image to fit the screen (like we started off doing), we now treat your screen (phone, tablet, laptop, and desktop) like a viewport into your new giant space. You and your guests can now navigate throughout the space using your arrow (or WASD) keys or your mouse. It also means that everyone now sees each other in the same place in the room i.e. sitting in chairs or standing by the water cooler.

This is just the first step in scaling our platform to meet our users’ demands for larger venues with more guests. Stay tuned to learn about more scaling updates currently in the works ;)

What does this mean to existing GroupRoom users? Free accounts now default to the above room image — no action required. Pro users may need to upload new room images. If your original GroupRoom image is too small, it will no longer stretch to fit the screen. We recommend choosing room images with dimensions: 1920px by 1080px (16:9 aspect ratio) are much, much larger. The good news is most Zoom background images are perfect for new GroupRoom images. You can also find many other cool room images by searching Google images and clicking on the tools/size/large filtering feature.

While we were at it, we also added a new chat room for team discussions and link sharing. Note: this chat room is ephemeral which means that your chat data is not stored on our servers. Users need to be in the room to receive the messages.

We also moved all of the room detail information and shortcut keys from the bottom right corner of the room and the linked room and user information to the room’s back page which is accessible by clicking the small new “hamburger” menu on the top right corner of the room. Here’s a screenshot of the new back page.

We are very excited about these new GroupRoom platform enhancements. We are even more excited about empowering our customers to host larger events through larger venues for their teams, customers, and friends.

Reach out to us on Twitter or Facebook or drop us an email if you would like a demo of GroupRoom or discuss your event in more detail with us.
