Hello. I’m Sydney. I’m a service designer. I solve problems for and with people.

I’ve been chatting to parents and children during the school holidays to find out what is important to them when thinking about the future of their education.

Lo-fidelity prototyping of a future service

Today I met 6 awesome people (ages 5-45) to find out their short term and long term goals in;

the community

at home

at school

and in digital

Short term goals for kids — Be connected!

  • 4/5 kids said “Getting back to school to be with friends!” Kids want to learn while also having more fun than they do now. With their friends. When they learn with their friends, they feel they grow and are happier. Having an online community helped facilitate this, but it wasn’t their favourite part, because they wanted to be able to play at school, see their friends reactions.
  • Kids that didn’t like online learning said that internet was a barrier because it dropped out frequently. So their experience wasn’t consistent, which was frustrating for them.

Long term goals — Helping the poor and data privacy

  • When asked what children expected to be doing in 10 years, kids said they would have got good grades and ‘a job in technology’. But when I asked what does a long and happy life look like, they said ‘Great food, good house and helping the poor’.
  • Some kids I spoke to today didn’t know about data privacy. They didn’t know about the choices available to them or how or why their data is stored. The kids didn’t know what this meant. But I am sure they would want to know.

As an ex-Rainmaker it is great to see Cloud first policy become widely adopted in the UK Government.

What is Cloud?! The public cloud has been available for a while now. It means it can save organisations a lot of money and also it’s more convenient for people. The public cloud may be shared by multiple organisations, like a ‘multi-tenancy’ of server space. You can read more about it here.

I asked kids if they could tell me one thing they want adults to know;

‘Give the kids who are less active or vocal in class the time to speak and have a voice’. From a 10 year old.

Working out loud means practising sharing knowledge, tools and resources and investing in deep relationships over networking to lead a more fulfilling life. That’s what I do. Wearing a mask, of course!
