On the streets, at home, in the gym and everywhere, you’ll see many people having something in their ear. Something to block out sound, something to listen to music, podcasts, audiobooks and more. Whether they are AirPods, earbuds or earplugs, they let you listen to things without disturbing others.

However, should we really buy it? I know this article is VERY late for the time it has been on the shelf, however, I hope to list the pros and cons of this technology and help you decide whether it is worth it.

PROS

  1. Time used more effectively

Whether you are travelling to and from school, work or leisure activities, doing chores, buying things or exercising, you can take in information or enjoy music at the same time. Multitasking! This also means that you don’t have to designate a time to read or listen to music.

2. Intake more information

Many may complain, “I don’t have enough time!” However, everyone has the same 24 hours everyday, and with these limited hours, successful people have definitely sprouted, grown and flourished. The more knowledge we have in our pockets, the greater impact we will have on the world and the closer we will be to success. 🥳

3. Listen while not disturbing others

Without an AirPod, earphone or earplug, you are limited to being able to listen to things like audiobooks and many more. Therefore, not allowing you to use your time in a more effective way and deciding what your ears are listening to.

4. Listen to a call while looking at other things

While answering a phone call from your angry boss or parent, they may be in a mood where they need things to be researched, jotted down or done right now at this moment! However, without these AirPods, you can listen but not action but when you action you are unable to listen. With AirPods, it allows you to do both at the same time while saving you from being shouted and scolded by your parent or boss.

5. Noise cancelling

CONS

  1. Worsening your hearing and health

It is recommended that people should be hearing things of up to 85dB. However, since these devices direct the sounds right into your ears, it naturally increases the sound by around 10 dB. Since there may be sounds made by other people and objects, the most natural thing to do is to raise the volume of your ear buds. Therefore, it will be very easy to get over the 85dB mark.

Another condition that signifies your ears have been damaged, are when you hear a buzzing or ringing noise. This symbolises that some of the hairs in your cochlea, a vital part to your hearing, have been damaged. As these devices are fitted into your ear canal, the passage that allows air to come through is blocked, therefore increasing the chance of infection. The long-term and regular uses of these devices results in greater bacteria, pain and excessive earwax growth. Did you know that this technology can also leave an effect on the brain? The ear infections and higher decibel sounds will affect the signals carried from the ear to the brain.
