There has never been a generation so keen on authenticity. This generation of young adults and leaders have changed what it means to find success. People (for the most part) are no longer responsive to being pushed by negative reinforcement, and the need to do their work to maintain their job. They are now driven by a sense of security, to be able to be transparent with their boss, and be instructed in a friendly manner. People may agree or disagree with this approach, but it is the reality we live in.

To ensure growth in this new era of employees, an authentic, and truly empathetic company culture will pay the biggest dividends in your success and future growth.

Empathy is an easily confused word, and it is much easier said than done. Showing the ability to understand the feelings of people who work for, or with you is not an easy thing to do. Especially since there are so many people from so many different backgrounds around the office that you may not even be confident with everyone’s names, let alone their story. But sometimes it isn’t necessarily about what you know, just how you act around them. It does not take much to listen if someone wants to be heard, or offer your opinion if someone seeks you out for advisory. Better yet, if you offer yourself to the console of a coworker, you may even find it helps you too, without even expecting it.

Being human can be confusing

From a more business-related standpoint, a superior showing empathy to their employees can seriously impact the well-being of the company. Having a leader or general employees who care for one another on a level deeper than just making money shows respect on a human level. An employee is much more likely to put forth their best effort working for someone whose human side shows through, and is available for support, than someone who they feel only cares about their output.

Providing support also allows for your employees to reach a high level of comfort within the workspace. No one wants to have to work on the edge of their seat, in fear of being in the office when they have other things at home to worry about. The office should be a place to get away from it all, to focus on something else and not feel on edge.
