Fingerprints as a means of personal identification is not new. We have been doing this over 100 years. Over the years other means of identification has superseded such as handwriting signature, photo etc., As the saying goes “History Repeats Itself”.

Most of us these days carry modern smartphones that come with fingerprint sensors. One of the Winter ’17 release feature makes use of these sensors as a way to authenticate the user instead of a password. This is branded as Lightning Login.

Note: This is NOT a replacement to Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)!

Find the setup instructions in the Winter ’17 release notes. Here is how I got it working.

Step 1 — Create a permission set with system permission “Lightning Login User” enabled and assign the same to yourself.

Step 2 — Navigate to your user account settings page and enroll for Lightning Login

Step 3 — Approve the enrollment request in your Salesforce Authenticator app.

Note: If you have never used the Salesforce Authenticator app, download it at AppStore or Google Play Store. Additionally, you might need to register your Salesforce Authenticator app such that your account and your smartphone are linked. Follow these instructions.

Browser showing approval request
iPhone showing the approval request notification for the Salesforce Authenticator app
Upon clicking the notification, Salesforce Authenticator opens up showing Approve/Deny options
Upon “Approve” button click, Salesforce Authenticator app uses iPhone Touch ID for approval request completion

Step 4 — Test by logging out and login with just the username. This will trigger the launch of Lighting Login method for authentication.
