Teaming up with Matthew McDermott

Most of the work at Guesstimate so far has been done solo, but I’m happy to say that’s changing. Matthew has recently joined Guesstimate as a cofounder.

I met Matthew in college and we became quick friends. We both got into web application development by co-creating Holono, an app that helped people showcase their technical projects. Later we participated in multiple Hackathons, worked for a startup, and ran the Future Tech club on campus.

Since graduating I spent time in the startup and nonprofit worlds and he worked at Google. When I started Guesstimate I spent quite a while talking to him about it. Matthew was one of the few people who really understood the mission and provided valuable advice.

Matthew has previously performed academic research modeling Tuberculosis spread, the intra-cellular kinetics of cell division, and faster algorithms for data transformation. At Google, Matthew worked on data infrastructure for Youtube, eventually leading conversion funnel data acquisition for YouTube Red. Before that, he hacked an Amazon book arbitrage system, a sensory deprivation chamber, and a neural plasticity watch.

I think he’ll be a fantastic fit.
