The Guidewire Design and Education teams have partnered to create the first hybrid class on designing for P&C insurance using Guidewire’s design system and UI framework (Jutro).

Customer and partner participants spent five days being immersed in understanding insurance, digital transformation, and creating compelling user experiences for “pet insurance” using Jutro.

Course participants got a deep dive into what constitutes a design system, why Jutro was created, and how they can leverage its toolkit to design consistent and compelling experiences.

They also learned how to use Jutro’s theming mechanism to apply branding to UI.

The course culminated in a final project that asked participants to tackle the following design challenge:

“How might we help pet owners find the right insurance coverage for their pets”

Using the Jutro Figma Library, they designed screens for this insurance-based use case.

All course participants adopted a user-centric approach, following Guidewire’s design-led development best practices.

Below are a few projects that showcase key design phases and the process for designing with Jutro.

User research — participants interviewed users from their personal and professional networks in order to gain insights and better empathize with user needs, pain points, and motivations.

They also worked with user flows to help drive their design decisions. These flows included various scenarios and use cases for pet insurance, focusing mainly on policy and claims.

Others opted for using journey maps during their design process. A journey map is a visualization of the process that a person goes through in order to accomplish a goal. (Nielsen Norman)

Before diving into designing with Jutro components and patterns, several learners experimented with hand sketches and low-fidelity digital wireframes to express their ideas.

The final Jutro-based screen flows showcased deep thinking and user empathy. Learners were able to work with Jutro component variants and states in Figma, explore the library’s styles and iconography, and design their screens while staying within Jutro guardrails.

Throughout their work on the final course project, learners had access to on-demand drop-in sessions where they could get help from our internal Guidewire Jutro design experts.

There were also peer design reviews in between assignments. These enabled learners to receive feedback on their design progress, ask questions from peers and instructors, express their doubts, and clarify any confusion.

Lastly, we made Jutro design documentation available to Guidewire customers and partners. This provided additional guidelines on component usage and best practices.

Learners had the chance to validate their designs with users and got extensive feedback from the course’s teaching team.

The Jutro UX Design Fundamentals course was not only an opportunity to learn about designing with Jutro, but also to create a design learning community. Participants bonded throughout the course, helping each other and cheering for each other as they achieved every milestone and aha moment.

In their own words :

“Very good explanation of how Jutro and design systems operate and add value in a real-life industry context, combined with great instruction in how to actually get to grips with the tools and components etc. Absolutely beneficial for someone planning to work with Guidewire products”

“I believe the course was very thorough, and as it went on, I found myself becoming more proficient in tools I had never used before. My approach to how design works and the limitations that designers have has expanded, and now I can understand their reasoning behind certain choices while also being able to make suggestions.”

“I think the course was a mix of challenging and informative learning! I enjoyed learning about the Jutro design system and had a lot of fun working on a project with real life application that is tied back to enterprise solutions.”

“I found the part about theming the most beneficial as it showed me how to change the colors throughout multiple instances and how to visualize what we currently have to work with.”
