GURLS Year 3 focuses on the theme: Connect. Participants learn how to build their network and connect with prospective allies to support their cause. The first cohort of GURLS Year 3 built on the skills they developed in Years 1 and 2 to design and facilitate a Gender Equity Workshop, which was open and free to the public. A number of individuals in the Bay Area Ultimate community participated.

The 2019 GURLS Year 3 cohort included Chuc Luu, Eliza Lerman, Liza Gull, Thais Thomas, Valeria Gaona, and Jayna Frank.

Workshop participants in small group discussions facilitated by two GURLS Year 3 members.

The workshop primarily focused on helping leaders (coaches & captains) on mixed high school teams, however the information shared in the workshop and linked below can be helpful for any individual working with girls, women, and non-binary players across all divisions (Adult Mixed Club, Middle School, Recreational League) and roles (coaches, captains, parents, players, team admins).

Weaving together powerful stories, discussion, activities, worksheets, and group scenarios, the GURLS Year 3 participants facilitated the session so that participants walked away with immediate and long-term tangible items to implement on their teams or in their community.

In the workshop’s exit survey, participants on average agreed or strongly agreed with the following statements:

  • I can give tangible examples of how players/coaches can honor team values.
  • I understand the importance of actively building a positive team culture.
  • I understand the importance of female leadership.
